Darwin Toy Library began in 1978 so that families and carers of Children with Special Needs could access a wide range of toys and equipment to assist with their children’s development. In the early years the Darwin Toy Library housed an adventure camp for teenagers, After School Care, Long Day Care and vacation care. It was soon realized that it would benefit the development of all children to access the Toy Library resources and the service was opened to the general public. A mobile service is offered to families of Children with Additional Needs who are referred by their Paediatrician or Therapist.
Darwin Toy Library is the largest Toy Library in Australia with close to 4100 loan items available. All toys can be taken home for two weeks, giving the children enough time to play and learn from the equipment borrowed before returning and selecting a new experience.
Family Membership is $88 per annum, concessional rates are offered to families with Additional Needs Children and low-income families. Group memberships are available at $143 for Childcare Centres, Day Carers and organisations that have many children in their care.
The Darwin Toy Library is supported by the Office of Children and Families and by the Department of Education for its services which supplements the revenue generated from Memberships, Donations, Grants and the Soft Drink van operating at Mindil Beach Sunset Markets on a Thursday evening.
