WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?
Bowen Therapy is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. It is sometimes called the “homoeopathy” of bodywork.
With their hands the practitioner makes small but measured inputs into the body stimulating the body’s own realignment process to heal itself, often profoundly.
Treatments are non invasive and work to strengthen and support the whole body, returning it to good health.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Clients usually lie on a massage table or can be seated on a chair, if required, for comfort.
A Bowen move involves very gentle but direct manipulation of the following structures of the body.
Muscles, Tendons, Fascia, Ligaments, Joints and Nerves .
The moves send information to the brain as to the status of the muscle and then information is returned allowing the body to realign and re-orient to a memory of a previously healthy state.
The practitioner delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles tendon, ligaments and nerves) and the body does the rest, responding in its own time, as it is able.
This technique is appropriate to use for all individuals of all ages and in all degrees of health.
When faced with acute injury, the practitioner may only address the traumatised parts of the body because there hasn’t been enough time for the injured client to begin compensating for , and accommodating to, the injury. Most practitioners work with clients whose conditions have developed over many years, where pattens of dysfunctional muscle recruitment and posture have become entrenched over time.
A session involves one or more ‘procedures’ each of which consists of several sets of moves. The practitioner pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the clients body to begin responding. After the nervous system begins to adjust to the tension level in the muscles, the client is ready for the next set of moves.
The first Bowen Treatment is approximately 1hr.30 mins. then subsequent treatments 1hr.
In contrast to other hands on modalities the Bowen Technique allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention. Because of the subtlety of Bowenwork and the body’s continuing response to it, other forms of manipulative therapy performed up to four days before or five days after a session may interfere with its effectiveness.
