The food is delicious, cared, balanced tastes and textures and good presentation for traditional styrian food (what you will not always find in Graz). The atmosphere is nice and the service very kind, the waiter who served us clearly know the menu. They have a store for local wines and other beverages, and high quality kernöl, great for gifts.

We came for lunch but as the restaurant was fully packed/reserved, we were asked to sit at the adjacent cafe which we could still order the restaurant food from. Very busy day for the staff even during lunch time. However, food was good and had hearty portions. They have a daily lunch menu at €7.90 for mains and €8.90 for main+soup.

Great atmosphere! Lovely food, tasty and well served. A true Austrian place, traditional yet modern and without unnecessary folkcloristic details. Fast service, fair prices. Try the chicken!!!

A prestigious restaurant with Styrian cuisine, well worth a visit. Placed in the slightly elevated price range, it nicely adds to all the choices for eating Austrian/Styrian in Graz. One thing, though: "DER STEIRER serves the traditional, authentic taste of Styria in all its rich variety." - as they state on their homepage.
Strange then, that this is the only restaurant, inn, pub, buschenschank or even sausage stand in all of Styria that I know, where this rich variety does not include even a single vegetarian dish. (Not counting the salad or deserts.) Their choice, of course, but it's a pitty, and not what I'd expect, walking into a restaurant in 2017. If you love meat, give it a try.

My favorite restaurant in Austria. High-quality food from local sources, nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and charismatic spirit of DER STEIRER. Backhendl is a legend! Please, keep it this way.
