We went on a Monday night with it freezing outside. The waiter was quite nice and the cafe warm, but his English was as bad as my German. My wife who knows no German was able to understand the menu with a tiny bit of assistance. We both had the Wiener Schnitzel and both were exceptionally pleased. I will come back if/when I'm back in Vienna. My wife says the women's restroom for is clear glass, but fogs when it is locked.
Rude waiter, saw we were struggling with menu and proceeded to make fun of us because we asked him to explain some of the dishes. They obviously don't need the custom of tourists if they can afford to be rude to their foreign patrons. Avoid if you are not Austrian.
Cozy warm nice place. Small menu, goulash very tasty. Quick service at lunch. Central position. They don't accept cards, only cash.
This pub dates back to 1936 and it's a less touristy establishment than other places in the centre of Vienna. The walls are covered with posters and other 'pieces of art' and fortunately there is a non-smoking room at the back. The ladies toilet is a bit of a surprise - not what one would expect from a place that old ;)
and so it is, and so is Kaffee alt Wien. star5, cause the beer glass has the name of the restaurant, small goulash was a perfect match with the bread, schnitzel was alrighty with the potatoes living up to the exact expectation as I was having. not fashionable yet has the core to say this is the place you visit for a schnitzel in Vienna. Had a pleasant night with the good food in front of me. and of course. the beer. my second visit I had a glass of white wine, which has one of the best taste I've ever tasted. This place has the great apple pie as well just so you know. well, you'll like it. smoking area and non-smoking area separated by the glass door. opens late, 2 in the morning. ciao!
Smoky and unique cafe. Might benefit from some restyling/update.
The goulash is very, very tasty.
Fab place. Individual in many ways. Much to look at. Great range of customers too. Good value, tasty food, served simply and without ceremony. Waiters smile more after the tip.
This is such a lovely place. Local people go there to read, have a coffee with friends and have a bier. Excellent atmosphere, not so touristic but the waiters speak english. Schnitzel, melange and apfelstrudel are great!
Friendly service, small menu but great food. Loved the atmosphere inside very chill posters everywhere kind of vibe. The bathroom is super high tech and fancy that was a unusual surprise for a place like this. I loved the whole experience. A+
A lucky chance find for us. Great atmosphere, efficient service, decent prices. Heartily recommended Oh, and you can smoke
Good food, kind service, reasonable prices. Almdudler spritz and schnitzel is a good choice. Luxurious toilets.
This is the way a realy true Viennese Cafe should look like. Crowded, shabby chic but with character:)
I really like this place, perfect location for a beer or a meal. Schnitzel is tasty, also Debreciner with Semmel. One aspect of the place I don't like that the seats and tables are a bit uncomfortable, especially the pool table in the middle of the bar what is not a pleasure to sit at, since there is not a proper place for the legs. There is a separate smoking/non smoking area and the separation works well, the non smoking area really stays clean of smoke most of the times.
Why go to that other famous place across the street with long lines when you can casually hop in here and grab a perfectly comparable schnitzel and amazing goulash immediately? There's no wait. No fake fancy atmosphere for what is basically fried bar food. I love the dive bar like posters in the non smoking area. Shocked at how modern and beautiful the bathrooms were. Best I saw in Vienna!
