Breath-taking views on holy Mount Ararat and the militarised border to Turkey. The church is lovely, and do not forget to go down Saint Gregory's ladder (unless you are claustrophobic of course)

It's an exciting place. We've visited the cave in which Gregor spend most of his years. It's nice piece of history and also great view. It's worth seeing.

You will get a good view of Mount Ararat, believed where Noah's Ark was resting. Gregory the Illuminator, patron saint and first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church was imprisoned here by for 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. You can get down through a small hole with vertical steps to see the prison 6 meter down.

Under the shadow of the magnificent mount Ararat, this monastery has a very interesting story about the founder of Armenian church. You can step down the stairs where he was supposed tone in jail for 13 years: wet, smelly and suffocating.

I visited here along with Garni temple and Geghard monastery on a daytrip. This was the last of the 3 I visited and the one I knew least about but it turned out to be by far the best part of the 3.
You get beautiful views of Mount Ararat in the distance while on inside you can climb down a long ladder down to a small room where the narrative goes the founder of Armenian church was held for over a decade in a pit full of snakes and vipers. The snakes are no longer there.

Well worth the journey if you are able to do it.

I just returned from a trip to Khor Virap today (Sept 11, 2016) via local bus. I discovered the local transport accidentally. At a bus depot near the Yerevan Railway station (which can be reached by metro/subway), there is a mini bus with a sign Khor Virap. The bus depot is about 5 minutes walking distance from the railway station. Use the metro tunnel which will lead you to the bus depot. The fare is 400-500 AMD one way. Most taxi drivers ask for 5000 AMD one way. I took the 11 am bus. The return trip was at 1:20 pm. The bus driver has a sign in English that says the price of the journey and the pick up time at the monastery. Do be punctual because he was. I do not know if there are earlier buses leaving for the monastery but I suspect there are because a lot of locals go there. The bus journey was about half an hour. The journey wasn't unpleasant as long as the driver does not smoke. :-)

It is a pleasure to visit sites with such cultural significance and history. It is even possible to visit the dungeon that imprisoned Gregory the Illuminator when visiting. Leaving candles to burn for loved ones and prayers is also a very reflective ritual that helps one to consider the ramifications of the things that happen in a single life, and how those events can impact the foreseeable future. Beautiful vistas of Ararat are also humbling and remind us of the great history of the Armenian people. The nearby plain is also fertile, yielding delicious fresh produce that can be acquired from farmers along the roadside.

One of the best places on Earth!
Literally, the name of the church means "Deep pit". There are two pits hiding inside. You can have the best view over Ararat in this pilgrimage sight.
You must visit this place if you are travelling in this country!
