What a gem! This is a wonderful museum with very interesting and beautiful work. No abstract paintings, just realistic paintings of the history of Albania. Some propaganda and some depictions of normal Albanian life. I did not know any of the artists, but they can surely measure with international painters from the same period 1880-1970. It was very quiet in the museum. The entrance does not look to be open and the doors have mirrors, not very welcoming. But behind the doors is an unexpected wealth of nice art pieces.

The exhibit has good translations, although as it gets to the middle ages of Albanian civilization, the English translations are almost non-existent, making it hard for a secondary language speaker like me to read it, although I can, with struggle, I know many others have an extremely hard time understanding the middle ages. But, besides the translation issues, the other parts of history are very well described in it's dual languages, and definitely is a must visit for all those visiting Tirane.

The National Museum of History (Albanian: Muzeu Historik Kombëtar) is the national historical museum of Albania and the country's largest museum located in Tirana. It was opened on 28 October 1981 and is 27,000 square metres in size, while 18,000 square metres are available for expositions.

Above the entrance of the museum is a large mural mosaic titled The Albanians that depicts purported ancient to modern figures from Albania's history. The museum includes the following pavilions, the Pavilion of Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Independence, Iconography, National Liberation Antifascist War, Communist Terror, and Mother Teresa.

The museum exhibit started with very good and detailed enough explanations of the early history of Albanian civilization in English. However starting from the late middle ages, the English explanations were almost non-existence. Those who only read English will most probably browse through late-middle ages, renaissance and independence pavilion very quickly. Was looking forward to of Albania's traditional and cultural exhibit, but unfortunately very minimal was shown. Having said that, it is still an interesting visit, and alot to see. And for 200Lek, it is very value for money. Toilet is only available at the entrance (also the same as the exit area). Very cold in some areas.

While it could be better this still remains one of the best museums in Albania. The museum walks you through the history of Albania from prehistoric times until the fall of communism. One item that could be changed is the inclusion of the relics of saints and the iconostasis from and Orthodox Church on the outskirts of Elbasan that were confiscated by the communist government when religion was outlawed. These items should be returned to their rightful caretaker. The Church.

Great place for a historic view on Albanian history. Unfortionately half of the info signs are in Albanian only, which leaves one with only half of the story. You can easily spend two hours here. Bring water on sunny days.

Very well done covering prehistory from 40000 BC to overthrow of repressive government. Lots of maps to help understand the periods. Some of explanation is in English. We took a guide which was very helpful with explanations. Some gold jewelry and hoarded coins. Rare funeral cloth like tapestry. Entire room dedicated to victims of Communist era. Nice gift shop with some books in English and made by hand one of a kind jewelry. Very reasonable, take euro dollar and lek but no credit card.
