About 4-5 years ago, I quit my 9-5. Well, I worked in advertising so it was more like 9am - midnight. I was mid-level but tasked with the job of an executive, manager, and director all rolled into one. As a jack of all trades, I had to do everything and be everything. What I didn't have, was time. Something had to give. The candle was burning at both ends, and while I had little authority, all the blame landed on me. Taking opinions from all directions, while having no contact with the client meant that the work suffered. Working agency side, I saw great theoretical idea after great theoretical idea be bounced around in pitch meetings. But, I always had two questions: what story is this telling? How is the audience going to connect emotionally with this? When my questions were met with disapproving glares (how dare I speak up against the creative director and self-proclaimed maestro of ideation), I started to feel like I didn't fit into this corporate world anymore.Frustrated with lack of direction, mismanagement of accounts, I left behind high-powered boardrooms in exchange for cafes and working from home.Fueled by the same question I had asked that earned me so many disapproving glares, I set out to create relationships between audiences and brands.
