Description

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.

In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000.

VFW Post 2909 is dedicated to Army Corporal Clarence F. Holland, a young man from the Priest River, Idaho area. His registration of draft took place on June 9, 1917. He gave his life for our Nation on October 28, 1918, in Crone, France, just weeks before the end of World War I. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Section Euro Site 2387.

Since the establishment of VFW Post 2909 on December 3,1933, countless men and women from this area have joined the ranks who have served in uniform, and some have made the ultimate sacrifice. More than 445 U.S. Veterans also have become members of VFW Post 2909 -- the Clarence F. Holland Post -- and provided support to the community and the Nation.
