Description

Thanks for stopping in! My name is Dan and I live in northwest Indiana. I have been using, and researching sensory deprivation tanks for a few years and I would like a very brief opportunity to explain the incredible benefits they provide.

In the 1950's Dr. John C. Lilly, was an American physician, neuroscientist, psychoanalyst, psychonaut, philosopher and writer. In 1953, Lilly began a job studying neurophysiology with the US Public Health Service Commissioned Officers Corps. At the National Institute for Mental Health in 1954, Lilly created the first ever, "isolation tank."

Why? Because, Lilly wanted to know how our brains would react if there was zero external stimuli... and his findings were amazing.

The tank has many different names such as, isolation tank, isolation chamber, float tank, floatation chamber, sensory deprivation tank, and so forth. But no matter what you call it, it's one of the most incredible and profound adventures a human can experience.

The tank is an enclosed box, about 8 feet long, 4 feet high, and 5 feet in width. The box is completely void of all stimuli you commonly encounter. It is lightproof, soundproof, odorless, and that's just the beginning...

With your sight, hearing, and sense of smell all completely useless, the tank has a couple more tricks up it's sleeve. The tank is filled with about 10" of water. That water is heated and kept at approximately 93.5º - 94º which is the temperature of the outside of your skin. Because the water is the same temperature as your skin, after a few moments, you don't feel the water touching your body. And for the grand finale, the water has about 800 pounds of Epsom salts dissolved in the water. This much salt creates so much buoyancy, that nearly any human being will float on *top of* the water.

So, I know I just threw a bunch of info at you, so let's recap:

1. Sight - you can't see anything, it's pitch black.
2. Smell - there is no distinct smell inside the tank.
3. Touch - the water is the same temperature as your skin, you can't feel it.
4. Taste - unless you like the taste of very salty water, keep your tongue in your mouth.
5. Hearing - The tank is completely soundproof.

With all your senses completely free, and your feeling of weightlessness from floating on top of the water, your mind begins to do something it's never done before. Since the day you were born your brain has been constantly processing information brought in by your five senses. When you think about how long your brain has been working without a break, it's really pretty incredible.

Even when you're sleeping, you're brain is still focusing on sounds around the room, and your body's adjustment to find a comfortable position. While you sleep, you talk, scratch your face, grind your teeth, twitch, toss and turn. A lot of what you think is "rest" ....really isn't.

Each person's experience in the tank can be different. But overall, it's a very relaxing, positive, and unique experience. Some people may visualize bright colors, lucid dreams, or dreams in which you are actually asleep while inside the tank. It's can be a very moving and introspective moment. Others may use the tank to explore the bounds of their consciousness, or meditate. Relief of stress and muscle tension is one of the most common reasons people float. The list doesn't end here and I encourage you to look into the many uses for floating.

The most frequent question people ask me is, "How can this possibly be sanitary?" Well, that's easy. Epsom salt is a natural antiseptic that inhibits the growth of microorganisms. The best example of this in nature is the Dead Sea in Israel. According to the Epsom Salt Industry Council of the US, when magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin it draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous system, reduces swelling, and relaxes muscles. Epsom salt is a natural skin emollient, skin exfoliator, and much more. In a float tank, there's no "prune skin" effect that you get when you lie in the bathtub for a long time. Plus, each tank has it's own filtration system that cycles the water through a salt water filter as well as a UV Light filter to kill any possible remaining bacteria. THE FILTRATION SYSTEM IS USED AFTER EVERY SINGLE SESSION. In addition, a shower is provided and participants are instructed to shower before AND after the session.

Okay, so I'm sure I lost some people, but thanks for sticking with me thus far! You may be wondering why I've created a page for a business that doesn't (yet) exist. Here's why: Sensory deprivation tanks are not commonly known. Most of what people do know (or think they know) is wrong. Nearly everybody I've talked to only know about their existence because of an episode of the Simpsons in which Homer gets in a sensory deprivation tank.

I currently have my own tank and I'm looking to start a very small float center. This is where YOU come into play. The more "Likes" this page gets, and the more input I have from you, the better foundation I will have to bring a float company into existence. This would be the ONLY floatation center in the state of Indiana. Floatation business' are few and far between mainly because of the lack of attention deprivation tanks receive.

If you've read this far then I'm sure you're somewhat interested in the topic. But please, don't take my word for it. Research, ask questions, dig until you can't anymore. I encourage the skepticism and questions because I fully believe in and have felt the positive effects from floating.
