Description

On the first Saturday each October the Mershon and Walkerville Communities in Pierce County hold an annual yard sale that runs the length of North, East, and West Horseshoe Roads. The sale begins at 8:00 am.
The 15 Mile Horseshoe Road Yard Sale was founded in the fall of October 2002 by Charlotte Smith, Sherri Dowling, and Joyce Dixon. Two of the three ladies had attended a local auction in the old Mershon School building in Mershon, Georgia and conversation began on what it would take to hold a community wide yard sale. After much planning and hard work it was decided that the yard sale would be held on the first Saturday in the upcoming month of October. Much to the dismay of the hardworking women it rained that first Saturday, but the sale was a success and it was decided to make this a reoccurring event each year and stick with holding it on the first Saturday every October. Mrs. Dowling has since passed away, but not before leaving a lasting legacy that still brings happiness and enjoyment to those whose lives she touch directly and indirectly in her coauthoring the idea of starting a community yard sale! In recent years others have stepped up to the plate to volunteer their time and join the ranks that now form the committee of the Horseshoe Road Yard Sale. These include Raymond & Amy Dixon, Susan Bennett, Ashley Smith, and Austin Moore. Charlotte Smith acts as President and Joyce Dixon vice President of the committee.
Anyone interested in participating or needing more information about the yard sale please contact Charlotte at 912-449-5223 or Raymond at 912-449-3136. Non community residents are encouraged to set up for a nominal fee of $5 per individual yard sale, this fee also applies to all community residents. One hundred percent of the money collected goes towards advertisement expenses. There will be numerous food vendors set up throughout the length of the sale. So please come and visit us in the future and when you visit our community remember; you may come and walk away empty handed or you may leave with a whole wagon load, but it is not the physical trappings that will make your day here special! It is the time you sacrifice and the memories you make while spending the day with loved ones, the new faces you will meet along the way, and the feeling that you will get when you spend a few hours driving down a winding country road on a cool fall Saturday that will make it worth its’ while!
