As we look at the future of transportation, an investment in green technologies appears to be more and more attractive to both manufacturers and consumers. The engineering is still in its adolescence, but we see great opportunities ahead for engineers in the field of sustainable automobiles.

Our hearts go out to Kati Lewis Paul (BME'11) on the loss of her husband this week. He was taken far too young. All of Bronco Engineering is sending you our heartfelt condolences and strength.

Sometimes the problems with integrating more sustainable energy is not a technical problem. The cost of producing wind energy in the U.S. has dropped dramatically in recent years but one problem remains: how to get that power into households. A report in Bloomberg says that one big sticking point is eminent domain laws that don't encompass interstate electricity-distribution lines, making the power hard to move. And while prices to produce wind energy have lowered, they could shrink even further if the U.S. taxes carbon, argues the report.

While we still have an interest in what lies beyond the stars, its good to know we can use the same technology to help us in our own biosphere. Engineers can find places in the field to make a real impact on earth-bound populations.

Can a 19-year-old engineering student from Idaho play a part in a project with a global impact? You bet! In this environment of connected resources, if you want to do something, it doesn't matter where you are.

On a non-engineering note, I'm excited by the upcoming Independence Day festivities. However, I have a new puppy in the house and I don't know how she'll handle it. For you other fur-parents, think ahead about the holiday and check out the tips below to make everyone happy.
Wishing you a great holiday!

What a monumental achievement for its time. Three men strapped on a gigantic bomb headed to another place that could not support life, then returning to freefall back to earth. Hats off to our spacefaring forefathers and the amazing adventure they launched.

One of the grand challenges proposed by the National Academy of Engineering is "Restore and Improve Urban Infrastructure". Autonomous vehicles, light rail services, and air taxis are part of the overall push to alleviate transportation problems.

This is a clear direction for engineers today and in the future. The team engineer that can say "here is something we can build, and here is how we can make it out of what we've already used" will be a rock star!

We're all about getting our hands dirty, and the robotics team is a great example of that. Congratulations to Griffith Allen, Jason Yasuto Kuwada, and the rest of the team for an outstanding effort!

Your technical skills can be awesome, but it looks like the future will require some of those pesky soft skills to get ahead.
