Ive been training Muay Thai for about 3 months and I can honestly say it is changing my lifestyle. Every class it's pushing your body to become stronger, but more importantly training your mind to focus and adjust. Coach Dave's classes have no more than 12 people and the hour long class is a good balance of shadow boxing, working out, partner work, and bag work. Every day I'm learning something new and how to correct my technique. The people in class are awesome and always willing to help no matter what level you're at. Location is great too! He even has a surf club and not to mention the sweetest dog Paris, greets you every time you come in. I love it. Can't stay away!!

My wife and I went to this place and the Coach was most hostile and unpleasant. He make fun of my wife several times because she is chubby and he kept secreting with another coach laughing mockingly, in the end he told us that we did not serve to box because we were very slow. They had told us that the first class was free but he wanted us to pay him. This guy is mentally sick then he started arguing with a young lady like a coward. He has no education or respect.

Coach Dave's classes are extremely fun, motivating, and rewarding - physically and mentally. Definitely recommend American Boxing to anyone who's looking to switch up their workout routine.

So I've been training here for about a month now and I have loved it so far! As mentioned in other positive reviews, if you can't handle constructive criticism and are an overly sensitive person, then this probably isn't for you. But the small class size allows for you to actually learn and work on proper technique and breaks aren't going to happen because you are there to train. The atmosphere is great and if you are looking to commit then this is an awesome place to do so !

Great workout with great people! If you are looking for a workout that pushes you, this is the place. Classes stay small so you actually get coached and don't hurt yourself with the wrong technique. Also, it feels good to hit the bag for a little bit after a long day. No on here has an ego, and everyone is there for the same reasons: work out and have a good time. I always feel great waking out of here and highly recommend to anyone looking for a good workout or a supplement to their workout routine.

I trained for about 6 months at one of your typical run-of-the-mill boxing gyms about two years ago.  I got out of shape after moving to San Diego last year so I decided it was time to get back into it.  This gym was my first and last stop.  From day one I realized just how awful my previous gym was.  I went from a gym of glorified dance classes that were overcrowded to an environment where you're actually trained to fight.

First of all, as you read these reviews you'll have some unsatisfied customers, and I'm here to tell you that these people did not leave those reviews because they had an ineffective training session.  Most likely these reviews are from people who were not able to take constructive criticism or follow instruction.  Remember that this is not a pilates class with gloves.  You will actually learn to fight here while simultaneously receiving a tremendous workout that will push you to your limits.  Doing so requires you to listen to your coach, and make the necessary adjustments he teaches you.

Second, you are going to get called out for improper form, and you're not going to be able to lie down and rest in the middle of a workout because you don't feel like doing push-ups anymore.  Although to some this training methodology may seem abrasive, it is extremely clear that it is all to push you and assist you in learning.

Finally, if you're curious about the people you'll be training with, everyone I've met has been awesome.  There really is a team atmosphere built into this place.  Everyone I've encountered has been helpful and encouraging.

If you're looking for a hell of a workout and interested in learning how to fight, even if you've never tried it, I highly recommend giving the free training session a go.  On the other hand, if you'd rather stick to your overcrowded Body Pump classes and instructors who coddle you every time you get a little winded, then perhaps you should just stick to that.  Hell, mediocrity simply suits some more than others.

Trained before in Chicago and New York and was looking for both proper technique and a kick ass workout. This was the first and last place I tried. Dave is experienced, entertaining and no nonsense. The people are friendly and there is a community feel. The classes are small and always something different. I highly recommend this gym for both women and men!

My 9 year old son has been training here for almost 2 years. He loves it! He trains 3 days a week with Coach Theri and/or Coach Dave. He has gained physical and emotional strength. His balance and coordination have greatly improved. The class sizes are small and there are little and big kids in the class. Most of the time the kids are punching and kicking bags or pads. Occasionally, the kids get to do light sparring. The kids wear gloves, shin guards and mouth guards. The kids have a lot of fun all while getting a workout! Win-win.

I started with a free class and trial week about a month ago. I was looking for a challenging workout that would kick my butt into shape. Coach Dave definitely delivered. Every class I have taken since starting my membership has been different and has been a great workout...the kind of workout where you don't look cute after and you walk a little crooked for the next couple of days. Coach will expect you to listen and not ask a lot of questions, so if you aren't sensitive or needy, want a challenge and are willing to work hard, this is definitely your gym. You'll get to work out with great people and excellent coaches.

I have been boxing for about 10 years off and on so when I moved to San Diego I wanted to find a coach with some experience and knowledge. Coach Dave has plenty of both! The atmosphere in the gym is very motivating and welcoming to new students of all experience levels. The workouts are very intense and the training is spot on! The classes during the week are diverse with technique and Friday's are GREAT if you enjoy sparring! I highly recommend this gym if you're looking to improve in boxing or Muay Thai. Or if you're just looking to get in shape this is where you'll see some of the fastest results guaranteed!

My wife was recovering from her second neck surgery and wanted to do something to build her strength up and found American Boxing. We decided to give it a try and loved it, for many reasons. Dave is very knowledgeable about training someone recovering from injury. He always had my wife's specific injury in mind and would tailor drills accordingly to prevent aggravating it.

Also, I had never done any martial art before, so I appreciated the atmosphere that Dave creates in his gym. If you are a meathead that just wants to learn how to hurt someone, this is not the right place for you.

The quality of the instruction was fantastic; Dave and the other coaches watch your technique and help you refine it. I always felt like I was learning a skill, while getting a phenomenal workout.

Dave and Terry are also amazing with kids. When my kids were trained, I always felt that they struck the perfect balance between discipline and teaching, never coddling too much, but also setting high standards for the kids so they would improve too.

American Boxing is a great place to get in shape, learn, and have a great time while doing it.

I don't think I have ever been so disappointed.
I went in for a free class and had a great experience and workout with Coach Kyle.
I was ready to drop money and join, buy gear and everything on the spot; however no one but the main person, (Coach Dave or whatever) was aloud to handle money. Understandable. They told me someone would reach out Tuesday. No one did. Two weeks went by. I exchanged several texts with their scheduler Tommy who told me not to worry and just show up Saturday.
I rode my bike 5 miles from Mission Beach to their gym in PB... only to be treated like crap and turned away by this Coach Dave because I didn'the bring my ID. He kept repeating that free classes were for SD residents only, which I totally am. But I wasn't there for a free class, I was there to join. Had he let me get a word in edgewise I might have helped him put things into proper perspective. He was too busy being a jerk and talking down to me in front of all present, with smart ass attitude saying, "excuse me for just having major surgery and being out for 3 weeks!" Get well soon guy, but what did that have to do with me or the nature of my business at the gym? Unprofessional. Unwelcoming. Short fuse.
This is not someone I would ever want teaching my kids.
