The FIA association and the PNG fishery includes onshore processing plants in Papua New Guinea (PNG), supported by PNG-flagged vessels and locally-based foreign fishing vessels.The PNG Fishing Industry Association launched in 2017 their Responsible Sourcing Policy (RSP) which includes 5 pillars: marine litter & fishing gear (ghost) management practices, crew welfare & labor onboard improvement, full traceability of the fishing operation & transparency, the sustainability of the PNG fisheries recognized by MSC and support of small & artisanal fisheries. FIA obtained the MSC certification of the tuna fish swimming in the PNG Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Archipelagic Waters (AW) in May 2020.According to the last tuna fish landing report from the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) in 2018, 395.000 MT of tuna fish were landed in the ports of Wewak, Lae, Mandag, and Rabaul in Papua New Guinea, making PNG the second biggest tuna hub in the Pacific Ocean.FIA has developed a strategic plan (5 years) to ensure the alignment with the SDGs applicable for the tuna fish operation and also to improve the responsible management of the fisheries in order to ensure food security for the next generation and local labor for Papua New Guinea.
