Arunachal Pradesh, as the name suggests, is a land of dawn-lit mountains. Western Arunachal, consisting of Tawang and West Kameng districts of Arunachal Pradesh has one of the most spectacular biodiversity hotspots in India. The breathtaking views of glaciers, large variety of flora and fauna in the lap of evergreen and alpine forests, vast grazing grounds, untouched terrain, mesmerizing trekking trails, mystic mountains, the sense of peace in the air, unexplored high attitudinal wetlands, serene lakes with crystal clear water, Buddhist culture, historical monasteries, cultural richness of tribes and their lifestyle has made this place one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
There isn't any better way than community based tourism to satisfy your zeal for exploring nature. Its a type of tourism which is aimed at facilitating tourism for nature lovers in local setup and satisfy the adrenaline rush of adventure fanatics while at the same time scale up the efforts for conservation of landscapes and provide incentives for local communities for their sustainable development .
The community based tourism was first initiated in Western Arunachal Pradeh in Thembang region of West Kameng district. This was among the first initiatives of WWF-India's Western Arunachal Landsacpe wing to scale up community based conservation efforts for conservation and development of biodiversity in this landscape which includes endangered creatures like red panda and snow leopard along with huge variety of flora and fauna. Today, the Thembang Bapu Community Based Tourism is self managed by villagers themselves with the little assistance from WWF-India. Now in Thembang, you can enjoy mountaineering, adventure trekking trails, forest camping, home-stays in villages, live life in a entirely Buddhism way, find peace and rejuvenate yourself.
Similar activities have been started in Zemithang region of Tawang district as well. Zemithang project is still at amateur stage and is expected to be self-sustainable soon.
